How a price is built

Behind every quoted price sits an estimated probability, and behind the set of prices on a market sits a deliberate distortion. Convert each price on a market into its implied probability and the total will exceed one hundred per cent; the excess is the operator's margin, and it is the cost of transacting regardless of who wins. On a heavily traded market that excess is thin. On an obscure one it is wide, which is the real reason a lower-tier fixture pays worse than its headline price suggests.

The practical skill is not predicting results but recognising when a price implies a probability different from a well-reasoned estimate. That is a narrower and more achievable objective than being right about matches, and it is the only one that survives contact with a long record.

Formats and what each costs

Singles apply the margin once. Multi-leg tickets apply it once per leg, which is why long combinations return so poorly over time despite the headline prices. Handicaps and totals apply it once but ask a different question, often a more answerable one. System tickets buy partial survival at the price of a multiplied stake. In-play and the latency problem

Live markets recalculate continuously and suspend around significant events while the model catches up. The appeal is obvious: information accumulates as a match unfolds, and a pre-match opinion can be revised against what is actually happening. The constraint is less obvious. Any stream reaches a viewer behind the venue — often by several seconds — which means a live price has already absorbed an event the viewer has not seen yet. Betting in-play from a broadcast is therefore structurally disadvantaged, and the disadvantage grows with how fast the sport scores.

Cash-out, described accurately

Cash-out offers to settle an open position early at a price the operator calculates. That price contains the ordinary margin plus an additional allowance for the operator's own risk, so accepting it repeatedly is a slow, voluntary cost. As an occasional risk-management decision on a large position it is entirely reasonable. As a habit it converts a bettor's edge, if any, into the operator's. The offered figure is never a neutral valuation of the position.

What a free bet is actually worth

A free bet returns winnings but not the stake, which makes it worth meaningfully less than its face value — the difference grows as the price shortens, so using one on a heavy favourite wastes most of it. Staking that lets a record mean something

Betting produces variance long enough to disguise both skill and its absence for months.
